Red meat is basically all the meat which is red when raw, including pork, beef, lamb and actually all mammal meat which we eat every day. Some may know, some may not know, red meat has been associated with many cancers such as breast cancer, stomach cancer, bladder cancer, etc. and especially colorectal cancer. Rather bad news, and that's not all, eating processed red meat is even worse.
A recently published study has shown that eating 50 g of processed meat per day--the equivalent of one typical hot dog, or two slices of deli meat--was associated with a 42% higher risk of coronary heart disease and a 19% increased risk of diabetes. This result is attributed to the fact that processed meats had about 4 times the amount of sodium and 50% more preservatives, such as nitrates, than the unprocessed red meat.
This sounds scary, but don't be overly scared by this fact, cancers and CV diseases are linked to large amount of red meat consumption only. Thus we don't necessarily need to stop eating the delicious pork and beef dishes. Moderated amount of red meat makes us happy and healthy, and eating more fruits, vegetables and fish is always a healthy lifestyle that leads to longevity.
p.s.1: I ate fish & spaghetti as dinner, which is an immediate effect from this post. And I will order fish rather than red meat more often for dear and myself from now on, which I know my dear will happily support.
